Reference project: Logistics - PSP Pack GmbH

Today we are presenting a successful project from our long-standing customer PSP Pack GmbH, an experienced logistics service provider that we have been supporting since 2009.

PSP Pack GmbH specializes in logistics and shipping processes and uses the ERP system Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

The current reference project involved the optimization and management of complex logistics processes for a (warehouse) customer that has outsourced a large part of its logistics services for storage and shipping to PSP.

  • Reduction of the necessary interfaces and systems involved
  • Standardization and simplification of logistics processes
  • Complete inventory information, planning and evaluation centrally controlled for B2B and B2C business
  • Greater flexibility through outsourcing and regional partnership

Project implementation

Together with bartolome röder AG, PSP Pack GmbH developed a fully integrated logistics solution in just two months:

Generic order interface

Initially, a generic order interface was developed that can be used universally for future (warehouse) customers. The interface currently enables CSV file exchange via an FTP server, but is already prepared for future web service connections.

Individual management cockpit

A dedicated administration cockpit was developed for efficient control, which clearly displays and processes incoming orders.

Android app for mobile order picking

Within three weeks, an Android app for high-performance scanners was also developed, which can be used to scan storage locations and items on the move.

Barcode-controlled process optimization

Picking takes place directly into designated containers or packages (picking boxes), all of which have a unique barcode. The employees scan storage locations, articles and the respective target containers, which minimizes errors and maximizes efficiency.

Automated dispatch processing

Shipping is processed automatically via connected shipping service providers such as DHL and DPD (depending on the order type B2C or B2B). Shipping labels are generated and printed automatically. In addition, a final check of the goods is carried out at goods issue using a barcode scan to ensure that each shipment is complete.

  • Intelligent cardboard suggestionThe ERP system automatically suggests the optimum carton based on the volume and dimensions of the goods ordered.
  • Parallel processing of several clientsOrders from several (warehouse) customers can be processed in the same warehouse at the same time, which enables optimal use of warehouse resources.
  • Automatic storage location barriersTo avoid errors and double bookings, storage bins are automatically blocked as soon as a (warehouse) customer claims them.
  • FEFO order pickingThe goods are removed according to the "First Expired First Out" principle, so that products with a shorter shelf life (or which have already been in storage for a longer period) are preferentially removed from storage.
  • Different process control for B2B and B2CSpecific logistics processes and picking methods were individually designed for business customers (B2B) and end customers (B2C).
  • Android app for mobile order pickingThe specially developed app ensures fast, mobile and error-free processing of picking processes directly in the warehouse.
  • Control scan at goods issueBefore dispatch, a final scan is carried out to check the completeness of each order.
  • Automatic feedback incl. tracking(Warehouse) customers automatically receive feedback on picking status and dispatch (tracking numbers), which increases transparency and customer satisfaction.

Android app for optimized order picking

The specially developed Android app for high-performance scanners (Keyence model BT-A700) offers real-time picking directly in the warehouse. Each storage location and item is clearly identified by barcode.

The process with the app is simple and clear:

  • The warehouse employee first scans the barcode ID of the collective picking list.
  • The app displays all item positions to be picked and highlights already picked positions in green.
  • Employees then scan the storage location, item and picking box ID to ensure complete and correct allocation.
  • Only after successful verification by Business Central are the article items finally registered and confirmed.

Technically, the app is based on the modern Blazor Hybrid technology from Microsoft .NET MAUI This technological basis means that the app can be deployed efficiently for different operating systems, such as Android (for PSP), iOS, macOS or Windows, using an almost identical code base. The app communicates with Business Central via specially developed REST web services, which can be accessed securely via the customer's Wi-Fi network.

Challenges and solutions

The go-live went almost without a hitch. Only the fine-tuning of the synchronization (FTP data transfer) required a short familiarization phase.
