Microsoft SQL Server 2016

With the Microsoft SQL Server 2016 a new version of the relational database management system was launched on the market this year. The software, which was first released in 1989, has a number of new features to offer, such as significant improvements in performance and greater security thanks to new encryption techniques. The focus is clearly on mobility and cloud use as well as speed.

We have summarized the most important changes for you:

  • Improved "in-memory" functions for online transaction processes OLTP
Significantly faster processing of transactions and queries thanks to in-memory tables.
  • Always Encrypted
The Always Encrypted feature ensures end-to-end encryption - both on the server's mass storage devices and during transmission to the client.
  • Query Store
By automatically collecting information about queries (plans) and runtime statistics in the Query Store, you can recognize database usage patterns and influence execution plans for the future. This also simplifies the search for causes of performance drops.
  • Live query statistics
Live Statistics offers the possibility of examining queries while they are still being executed and analyzing which steps are executed and how.
  • JSON (JavaScript Object Notation)
A new data type has been implemented for the popular JSON data exchange format. In addition to XML, SQL Server 2016 now also supports JSON directly. This includes both the generation of JSON from existing data and access to information via JSON Path.
  • Temporal Tables
When creating, changing or deleting data, the changes can now be saved (versioned) so that they can be quickly recorded or retrieved for monitoring, reporting or history purposes.
  • Stretch Database
With Stretch Database, SQL Server 2016 can outsource historical data to an Azure SQL database (cloud). The data is not stored in "cold storage", but is available for queries in "warm storage".

The introduction of SQL Server for Linux, which is planned for summer 2017, is revolutionary.
SQL Server 2016 (valid for the Express Edition, the Standard Edition and the Enterprise Edition) is currently compatible with Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2016, Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2015, Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 R2 and Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013.
Microsoft has also announced that NAV 2017 will also be compatible with SQL Server 2016.
